Rediscovering a Classic: The Adventures of “BJ and the Bear”

Story by Mitchell Smith

Well hello everybody. Today I’m taking a look at one of my favorite shows from when I was a wee lad. “BJ and the Bear”, is a series, which aired from 1979 to 1981, blended elements of action, adventure, and comedy, creating a beloved yet often overlooked gem of its time. “BJ and the Bear” followed the adventures of B.J. McKay, a charming and rugged truck driver, and his best friend, Bear, a lovable chimpanzee. Greg Evigan portrayed B.J., whose full name was Billie Joe McKay. The dynamic duo traveled the highways of America in B.J.’s red and white Kenworth K-100 Aerodyne truck, delivering goods while encountering various escapades and colorful characters along the way. Bear, the chimpanzee, added a unique twist to the show. At its core, “BJ and the Bear” was about freedom, friendship, and the American spirit of adventure.

B.J. McKay epitomized the independent trucker, a modern-day cowboy of the open road. The show tapped into the late 1970s’ fascination with trucking culture, which had been popularized by movies like “Smokey and the Bandit.” It was so much fun growing up in this era. My brothers and I would stand by the road and put our arm in the motion of pulling the air horn every time a big rig would go by the house. The red Cabover with the white stripe was also likely the inspiration for another iconic animated hero Optimus Prime.

Growing up driving truck looked fun with shows like this. I never imagined driving but somehow I fell into the industry. I’ve been dispatching for over 25 years and I’ve heard stories from back in the 70’s and 80’s and it was a fun time for those now depleting old timers. This is a classic show and one that I have very fond memories of. Have a great week everyone.
